St. Johns County also spells out the seasonal rule clearly: from March 1 through September 30, vehicles accessing the beach must pay a toll and display a valid beach pass, with daily and annual passes available.
Even if you can drive on the sand, I recommend at least one day where you skip the vehicle access and go classic: park, carry your stuff, settle in. It keeps the day calm, and you avoid the “are we allowed right now?” mental loop.

If your plan is “historic district dinner and dessert every evening,” understand you will likely be crossing back and forth frequently. That is fine, but it should be a decision, not an accidental habit.
This is where Vilano guests get tripped up: they assume they can wander into dinner like a big resort area. Some nights you can. Other nights, you will be glad you made a plan.
Surfside Kitchen is a locally owned “coastal casual” place in Vilano with a broad menu that fits families and mixed groups.
If you want the full sunset moment, plan for it. Cap’s on the Water is known for waterfront dining and even promotes using a live waitlist.
If you want a classic, relaxed meal with a “Florida old-school” feel, Aunt Kate’s is a longtime local favorite on the water.
The simple move: choose one “sunset meal” night and keep the other nights casual so you are not chasing perfect dining every day.
Vilano Beach is close to St. Augustine, but day-trippers and weekend visitors often lose time in a sneaky way: too many little runs.

This is one of my favorite pairings: Vilano Beach stay + Marineland dolphin experience. It is a clean add-on that turns a beach vacation into a lifetime-memory vacation.
Marineland is very clear: you must arrive at least 60 minutes prior to your program time, and late arrival can mean exclusion without refund or exchange.
If someone in your group is not a strong swimmer or just wants a simpler interaction, Marineland’s Meet and Greet is an out-of-water option with posted times and the same “arrive 60 minutes early” guidance.
You will enjoy St. Augustine more after dolphins, because you are no longer watching the clock.
