6 Amazing Dolphin Secrets and John the Dolphin Expert

I Met Dot the Dolphin in Orlando – 6 Amazing Facts I Learned From Her Trainer

Hi, everyone! John the Dolphin Expert here!I’ve been in the dolphin business for over 30 years, and let me tell you something: these amazing marine mammals still surprise me. Just when I think I know everything about dolphins, I learn something new!Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit an Orlando Dolphin Program and interview a professional dolphin trainer named Meaghan. Her official title is zoological specialist, but I had enough trouble saying that during our interview! Meaghan introduced me to a beautiful female bottlenose dolphin named Dot.

And what a personality Dot has!

My goal was simple. I wanted to ask five questions that customers have asked me over the years about dolphins. Questions about jumping, sleeping, eating, intelligence, and communication. We also talked about something very important to me: dolphin care.

If you’re planning an Orlando vacation and have ever dreamed about swimming with dolphins in Orlando, I think you’ll really enjoy what I discovered.

Meeting Dot the Dolphin and Her Trainer, Meaghan

One of my favorite things about this business is getting to meet the people who dedicate their lives to working with marine mammals.

Meaghan spends her days observing, caring for, and working with dolphins. During our interview, I could see how much she enjoyed sharing her knowledge about Dot.

And Dot? Well, she was the star of the show!

Instead of simply telling you what dolphins can do, Meaghan demonstrated some of their fascinating natural behaviors. Dot even performed a spectacular jump right in front of us.

That’s the beauty of an Orlando swim with dolphins experience. You’re not just seeing a dolphin from a distance. You’re getting an opportunity to learn about these incredible animals from people who work with them every day.

Introduction with Meaghan and John the Dolphin Expert

Fun Fact #1: Why Do Dolphins Jump Out of the Water?

My first question to Meaghan was one I’ve heard hundreds of times: Why do dolphins jump?

We all love watching dolphins leap out of the ocean. But have you ever wondered why they do it?

Meaghan explained that dolphins jump for several different reasons. Sometimes they’re playing or releasing energy. Other times, jumping can be a form of communication.

And here’s something that made me laugh. Dolphins might even jump to scratch an itch!

Imagine that! We scratch our backs, and dolphins have their own interesting ways of dealing with an itch.

Watching Dot Make an Amazing Jump

During our interview, Meaghan asked Dot to demonstrate a jump. Dot swam away, gathered her momentum, and suddenly launched herself right out of the water!

Wow! What a beautiful sight.

I’ve seen dolphins jump in Florida, Hawaii, and other destinations, and I never get tired of watching them. I even mentioned to Meaghan that I’d observed spinner dolphins in Hawaii performing incredible leaps and spins.

These are powerful, graceful animals, and seeing them in action is one of the reasons people fall in love with dolphins.

Fun Fact #2: How Do Dolphins Sleep Without Drowning?

This next question has always fascinated me.

We humans put our heads on a pillow, close our eyes, and go to sleep. But dolphins live in the water and must come to the surface to breathe.

So how in the world do they sleep?

Meaghan told me something amazing: dolphins can rest one side of their brain at a time!

This is called unihemispheric sleep.

While one side of the brain rests, the other remains alert enough to help manage important activities such as breathing and swimming.

Could Dot Be Sleeping Right in Front of Me?

Meaghan explained that dolphins take periods of rest throughout the day. She even mentioned that Dot could potentially be resting during our conversation!

I looked at Dot and thought, “Come on, Dot, don’t fall asleep during my interview!”

Apparently, a dolphin doesn’t need a pillow, a blanket, or even a comfortable mattress.

They may continue moving slowly through the water while resting. Sometimes one eye closes, and sometimes both eyes appear open.

Think about that the next time you’re watching a dolphin glide peacefully through the water. You might be watching a dolphin taking a nap!

Fun Fact #3: How Much Food Does a Dolphin Eat?

I’ll admit something. I enjoy eating. Maybe a little too much sometimes!

But after talking with Meaghan about Dot’s diet, I realized I have nothing on a hungry dolphin.

Meaghan explained that the dolphins she works with may eat approximately 10 to 15 pounds of fish per day, depending on the individual dolphin.

That’s a lot of seafood!

Their meals can include different kinds of fish, such as herring, mullet, and capelin, along with squid.

Every Dolphin Has Its Own Diet

Here’s something important that I learned. Dolphin trainers don’t simply hand every animal the exact same amount of food.

Each dolphin receives a diet designed for its individual nutritional needs. Just like people, dolphins can have different dietary requirements.

During our discussion, I joked with Meaghan that if I ate 12 or 13 pounds of food every day, I’d probably have some serious problems!

Fortunately, I’m not a bottlenose dolphin.

Learning about feeding routines is one of the educational highlights of many Orlando Dolphin Programs. You begin to appreciate how much knowledge and daily preparation goes into caring for marine mammals.

Fun Fact #4: Are Dolphins Smarter Than Dogs?

Okay, I’ll admit that I asked Meaghan a pretty tough question.

Who’s smarter, a dolphin or a dog?

Now, I know there are plenty of dog lovers out there. And I love dogs, too. But after working around dolphins for more than 30 years, you can probably guess which animal I favor!

Meaghan gave me a very thoughtful answer.

Both animals are intelligent, but they have evolved to live in completely different environments. Comparing them directly isn’t necessarily fair.

Dolphins Can Learn Some Remarkable Behaviors

What makes dolphins so fascinating is their curiosity, memory, social behavior, and ability to learn complex tasks.

Meaghan explained that dolphin calves learn from their mothers through observation, imitation, and play.

Professional trainers also use positive reinforcement during learning sessions. A whistle can communicate that a dolphin has completed a requested behavior, followed by something rewarding, such as fish or a gentle rub.

This helps trainers build relationships with the dolphins while teaching behaviors useful for interaction and healthcare.

But I still told Meaghan that I think dolphins are smarter than dogs!

Hey, after 30 years in the dolphin business, I’m allowed to have a favorite, right?

Fun Fact #5: Do Dolphins Really Talk to Each Other?

Here’s another question customers frequently ask me: Can dolphins communicate the way we do?

Well, the answer is yes, although their communication is very different from human conversation.

Meaghan explained that dolphins produce a variety of sounds and also use body movements to communicate.

During our interview, Dot even gave us a little vocal demonstration!

Now, I couldn’t tell you exactly what Dot was saying. Maybe she was saying hello. Maybe she was telling me to ask fewer questions!

Dolphin Whistles, Sounds, and Body Language

Dolphins communicate using whistles, clicks, and other vocalizations. Meaghan also explained how tail slaps and other body movements can send signals to other dolphins.

Scientists continue studying dolphin communication, and there is still much to learn about the meaning of their different sounds.

What fascinates me most is that dolphins are highly social animals. Communication plays an important role in their daily lives.

When you visit an Orlando dolphin experience, watch their body movements and listen to their sounds. You may begin noticing behaviors you never paid attention to before.

Bonus Fact: How Do Dolphin Trainers Keep Dolphins Healthy?

This was one of the most important parts of my interview.

People often ask me how professional facilities care for their dolphins, and I wanted Meaghan to explain what happens behind the scenes.

She told me that the animal-care team observes the dolphins closely and performs daily health checks.

Dolphins Participate in Their Own Healthcare

One fascinating aspect of dolphin care is something called husbandry training.

Through learned behaviors, dolphins can voluntarily participate in important healthcare routines.

Meaghan explained that Dot can be asked to open her mouth so trainers can examine her teeth, present her body for inspection, and participate in other health-monitoring procedures.

Veterinary teams can also perform blood sampling and ultrasounds when needed.

Because trainers work closely with individual dolphins, they can often recognize subtle changes in normal behavior that might indicate a health concern.

I found that especially interesting. There’s so much more to dolphin training than teaching a dolphin to jump!

Reading about these amazing behaviors is one thing, but actually seeing Dot in action is even better.
