The museum is located in the former Hotel Alcazar and combines art, history, architecture, decorative objects, and some collections you probably would not expect to find together.
That variety helps when you’re traveling with children who may not want to spend two hours looking at one type of exhibit.
The museum’s collection includes Gilded Age furniture, American art glass, vintage typewriters, mechanical musical instruments, and other objects. It also presents changing exhibitions throughout the year.
One practical advantage is its downtown location. If the rain lets up, you can easily continue exploring the historic district instead of losing the entire day to an indoor backup plan.
For younger children, I would not feel obligated to see every gallery. Pick the areas that interest your family and move on when everyone’s attention starts fading.
A vacation museum visit does not have to become an endurance test.

Many families walk past Flagler College and admire the building from outside. Going inside gives you a much better understanding of what you’re looking at.
Flagler College occupies the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, one of the most recognizable historic buildings in St. Augustine. Historic tours take visitors through selected public and ceremonial areas of the former hotel.
Older kids who are interested in architecture, stained glass, Florida history, or how wealthy travelers vacationed more than a century ago may especially enjoy this one.
I also like it as a rainy-day choice because you’re still experiencing something that feels very much like St. Augustine. You haven’t simply substituted a generic indoor activity because the weather turned bad.

If your family wants more traditional St. Augustine history, the Oldest House Museum Complex is another option to keep in mind.
The property is operated by the St. Augustine Historical Society and gives visitors a look at the city’s long history through historic buildings, collections, exhibits, and interpretation.
This is a good choice for families with school-age children who are starting to understand that St. Augustine’s history stretches across different countries, governments, and generations.
It also pairs well with the historic district. If you get a break in the rain afterward, you can continue exploring nearby instead of getting back in the car.

One nice thing about St. Augustine is that not every museum feels like a school field trip.
The city has indoor attractions covering art, pirates, local history, unusual collections, architecture, and coastal culture.
That matters on a rainy vacation day.
If everyone is already disappointed that the beach plans changed, this may not be the moment to insist on the attraction Mom and Dad find educational while the children clearly have other ideas.
Instead, look at the ages and interests of your kids.
A child fascinated by pirates may be much happier exploring pirate history than looking at decorative art. A teenager interested in architecture may enjoy Flagler College or the Lightner Museum. Younger children may simply need something visual enough to keep them interested and moving.
My advice is to choose the attraction based on your family instead of somebody else’s Top 10 ranking.

The St. Augustine Surf Culture and History Museum is located within the Oldest House Museum Complex and tells the story of surfing in the local community.
Its collection uses oral histories, photographs, film, music, artifacts, memorabilia, and historic surfboards to show how surfing became part of St. Augustine’s coastal culture.
For families spending part of their trip at St. Augustine Beach, this can make a nice connection between the city’s history and the coastal lifestyle you see today.
It may also appeal to a child or teenager who hears the words “history museum” and immediately starts looking for the exit.
History does not always have to mean forts and colonial furniture.

Not every rainy-day activity needs an admission ticket.
If the weather is on and off rather than a complete washout, sometimes the best strategy is to change the pace of your day.
Spend more time over lunch. Browse indoor shops. Visit a museum for an hour. Stop somewhere for dessert. Then head outside when the weather improves.
This works particularly well around St. Augustine’s historic district because it is easy to combine indoor stops with outdoor sightseeing as conditions change.
The mistake I would avoid is trying to follow the exact itinerary you planned when the forecast was sunny.
If you’ve scheduled three outdoor stops and a storm moves through, forcing the original plan usually makes everyone frustrated.

Your kids will not care that Tuesday’s activities happened on Wednesday instead.

However, families should not automatically assume that rain means their St. Augustine dolphin experience is canceled.

The Dolphin Swim is the more active option, with shallow- and deep-water participation and a dolphin ride. The Dolphin Encounter stays in shallow water and does not require swimming. There is also a poolside Meet & Greet for guests who prefer not to enter the water.

This is something Florida visitors sometimes learn halfway through the vacation.
You don’t need rain to appreciate air conditioning.
During hotter parts of the year, an indoor attraction in the middle of the day can make the entire family much happier.
You might spend the morning outside, move indoors after lunch, and return to outdoor sightseeing later in the afternoon.
That is often a better plan than scheduling six straight hours outside simply because the forecast shows sunshine.
This can be especially helpful when traveling with young children, grandparents, or anyone in the group who does not handle heat well.
The goal is not to see the maximum number of attractions.
The goal is to enjoy the day.
I would first look at the type of weather you’re actually dealing with.
There is a big difference between scattered showers and a day of steady storms.
If showers are moving through, choose indoor stops near the places you already wanted to visit. You might spend some time at the Lightner Museum or take a Flagler College tour, then head back outside when conditions improve.
If the entire day looks wet, choose one or two larger indoor activities and give yourself more time for meals.
