Today, your best options are in the Upper Florida Keys — Key Largo and Islamorada. Both destinations make a wonderful day trip from Fort Lauderdale and give you the opportunity to enjoy one of the most memorable activities you can add to your South Florida vacation.

Your 2 Best Dolphin Locations From Fort Lauderdale

Today you have two main Upper Keys locations to consider:
Key Largo and Islamorada.

The biggest difference is not simply price.
It is the type of day you want.

If your main goal is getting to the dolphins and having a focused dolphin experience, I would look closely at Key Largo.

If you want the dolphin program to be part of a larger half-day marine-life attraction with shows and other things to see, I would look at Islamorada.

Choice #1: Key Largo Dolphin Programs

— About 2 Hours From Fort Lauderdale

For many Fort Lauderdale visitors, Key Largo is the first option I recommend looking at because it is the first major island of the Florida Keys and is closer than Islamorada.

This location is focused primarily on the dolphin experience rather than spending several hours inside a traditional marine-life park.
The dolphin programs take place in a natural ocean-water setting.

Key Largo Dolphin Swim – $275

This is the choice for guests who really want to swim with dolphins.
Participants enjoy both shallow- and deep-water interaction and may experience dolphin behaviors such as touching, petting, hugging, playing and a at least 1 dolphin ride behavior.

The current program is for guests age 7 and older, and participants should be comfortable swimming in deeper water. Professional digital photos are currently included with the program.

Key Largo Dolphin Encounter – $225

Don’t want to do a full deep-water dolphin swim?
The Key Largo Dolphin Encounter is the alternative I would look at.

The experience begins from a shallow-water platform where guests can touch, interact and play with the dolphins.
Qualified participants may have opportunities for additional interaction in deeper water, but there is no dolphin ride in this program.
The current minimum participation age is 3.

Choice #2: Islamorada Dolphin Programs & Marine Park

— About 2 to 2½ Hours From Fort Lauderdale

Islamorada is farther south than Key Largo, but you are getting a very different experience.

I usually recommend Islamorada to families who tell me:
“John, we don’t just want to do the dolphin program. We want something we can make a bigger part of our day.”

That is where Islamorada has an advantage. Your visit can include the dolphin program along with marine-life shows, exhibits and other park activities.
The current program information includes dolphin shows, a sea lion show, parrot shows, exhibits, a boat ride and access to the lagoon-side beach.

Islamorada Dolphin Swim – $235 Low Season / $255 High Season

The Islamorada Dolphin Swim is the stronger choice for confident swimmers who want a deep-water dolphin experience and also want to enjoy the rest of the marine park.

The dolphin portion includes approximately 20 to 30 minutes of interaction, and participants need to be comfortable swimming and using fins in deep water. You will pet, play, kiss and do tricks with the dolphins plus at least 1 ride across the dolphin lagoon. The attraction can turn the experience into approximately a half-day outing when you include the shows and exhibits. Age 8 years old and up.

Islamorada Dolphin Encounter – $210 Low Season / $225 High Season

The Islamorada Dolphin Encounter is a shallow-water, non-swim program and is one of my favorite alternatives for families with younger children or people who do not want a deep-water swim.

Participants can interact with dolphins while standing in shallow water and can enjoy behaviors such as touching, playing, cradling and interacting with the dolphin. The current program is listed for ages 1 and older, with additional adult-participation requirements for younger children.

Compare Dolphin Programs Near Fort Lauderdale

Important: The Upper Keys Are NOT Key West

I need to emphasize this because I have probably had this conversation with Fort Lauderdale customers thousands of times over the years.

Someone calls our office and I tell them the dolphins are in the Florida Keys.
Immediately they say:

“The Keys? That’s too far. We don’t want to drive all the way to Key West!”

But I am not telling you to drive to Key West.

The Florida Keys are a chain of islands.
Key Largo is the beginning of the Keys.
Islamorada comes after Key Largo.
These are known as the Upper Keys.

Key West is much farther south at the end of the island chain.

A Fort Lauderdale-to-Key-West round trip makes for a very long day.
I generally would not recommend combining that drive with a dolphin program unless you have a very specific travel plan.

A trip from Fort Lauderdale to Key Largo or Islamorada, however, is much more practical as a day trip.
That distinction is extremely important when you’re planning your vacation.

Driving From Fort Lauderdale to the Upper Florida Keys

Driving from Fort Lauderdale to the Upper Keys is actually pretty straightforward. You do not have to navigate a complicated series of back roads. You will need a sun pass to travel on the Florida Turnpike.

1. Leave Fort Lauderdale and head south.
2. Take the Florida Turnpike south.
3. Continue toward Florida City / Homestead.
4. From Florida City, connect with U.S. 1.
5. Stay on U.S. 1 into Key Largo.
6. If you booked Islamorada, simply continue farther south on U.S. 1.

Make the Drive Part of Your Florida Keys Day Trip

Once you reach Florida City, you are basically following one main road through the Keys.

And here is another advantage of renting a car:you are not just driving to a dolphin program. You are getting an opportunity to see part of the Florida Keys.

You can stop for lunch, grab a piece of Key lime pie, look at the water, have dinner on the way back or simply enjoy driving through a completely different part of South Florida.

How Far Is the Dolphin Swim From Fort Lauderdale?

I tell customers to plan approximately 2 hours to Key Largo under typical conditions and more time for Islamorada.
Traffic conditions can change considerably, especially on weekends, holidays and busy travel periods, so always check your navigation app the morning of your trip and give yourself extra time. The current Key Largo and Islamorada program pages both advise Fort Lauderdale visitors to plan around two hours or more depending on location and traffic.

Don’t Wait Until You Arrive in Fort Lauderdale to Book

One mistake I see over and over is someone arriving in Fort Lauderdale, deciding at the last minute that the family wants to swim with dolphins, and then calling us expecting four or five spaces the next morning.

Dolphin programs operate with small groups.
That is part of what makes them special — but it also means availability can disappear quickly.

No. There is currently no dolphin swim facility located in Fort Lauderdale itself.
Dolphin World has a long history serving Fort Lauderdale visitors, but today you will need to travel south to the Upper Florida Keys for the dolphin experiences I recommend.

Why does Dolphin World Fort Lauderdale advertise dolphin swims if there are no dolphins in Fort Lauderdale?

Because Fort Lauderdale has been one of Dolphin World’s primary customer areas since I started the business in 1995.
Historically, we picked guests up from Fort Lauderdale hotels and transported them to dolphin programs farther south.
Today we still help Fort Lauderdale visitors choose and reserve their dolphin experience, although the actual dolphin facilities are in Key Largo and Islamorada.

Where is the closest place to swim with dolphins from Fort Lauderdale?

For the Upper Florida Keys options featured on this page, Key Largo is the closer choice.
It is the first major island as you enter the Florida Keys from mainland South Florida.

How long does it take to drive from Fort Lauderdale to Key Largo?

Plan roughly two hours under typical conditions, although drive times depend heavily on your exact Fort Lauderdale location, traffic, weather, weekends and holidays.
Always check live traffic before leaving.

Is Islamorada farther than Key Largo?

Yes.
You enter Key Largo first when driving south from Fort Lauderdale.
Islamorada is farther down U.S. 1.
The tradeoff is that the Islamorada dolphin programs are part of a larger marine-life park experience with shows and exhibits.

Is Key Largo the same as Key West?

No — and this is probably the biggest misunderstanding I hear from visitors.
Key Largo is in the Upper Florida Keys near mainland South Florida.
Key West is much farther south at the end of the Florida Keys island chain.
A Key Largo day trip from Fort Lauderdale is completely different from driving all the way to Key West and back.

Which is better from Fort Lauderdale: Key Largo or Islamorada?

Neither is automatically better.
If you want a more focused dolphin experience and the shorter drive, I generally recommend looking at Key Largo first.
If you want dolphins plus marine-animal shows, exhibits and more activities for the family, Islamorada may be worth the additional drive.

What is the difference between a Dolphin Swim and Dolphin Encounter?

A Dolphin Swim is designed for participants who want a more active water experience, generally including deeper-water interaction and dolphin swim behaviors.
A Dolphin Encounter is primarily a shallow-water interaction and is a better choice for younger children, non-swimmers or anyone who does not want the deeper-water portion.
Exact activities and requirements vary by location.

How much does it cost to swim with dolphins near Fort Lauderdale?

Absolutely.
That is exactly how I have viewed the Upper Keys dolphin experience for Fort Lauderdale visitors since I started Dolphin World.
Leave early, enjoy your dolphin program, spend some time in the Keys, have lunch or dinner and return to Fort Lauderdale that evening.

Should we book the dolphin program before arriving in Florida?

Yes.
I strongly recommend booking ahead, especially if you are traveling during weekends, holidays, spring break, summer or Christmas.
The dolphin programs operate with limited participant spaces, so your preferred date or time can sell out.

Are There Any Dolphin Facilities in South Florida Besides the Florida Keys?

No. At this time, there are no dolphin interaction facilities in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach counties. The Miami Seaquarium was the last dolphin facility in South Florida, but it is now closed.

For visitors staying in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Palm Beach, the closest dolphin interaction programs are in the Upper Florida Keys, including Key Largo and Islamorada.

How Dolphin World Fort Lauderdale Started in 1995

From Fort Lauderdale to the Florida Keys: Dolphin World Comes Full Circle

I know some of you are disappointed that the Miami dolphin location is no longer available. I understand. For many years, Miami was a convenient option for our Fort Lauderdale customers. You could leave your hotel, head south, and enjoy a dolphin program without making the longer drive into the Florida Keys.

But here is the way I look at it: with just a little more planning, you can still swim with dolphins during your Fort Lauderdale vacation — and now you also get to experience the Upper Florida Keys.

I have been helping guests swim with dolphins since 1995, and this is actually where the Dolphin World story began.

When I started Dolphin World, Fort Lauderdale did not have a dolphin swim facility. So we solved that problem by picking guests up from Fort Lauderdale-area hotels and driving them south to the Florida Keys. Back then, guests would climb into one of our vans in the morning and make the approximately 2 to 2½-hour trip to the Upper Keys for their dolphin experience.

And people loved it.

For many of our early customers, the trip from Fort Lauderdale to the Keys became one of the highlights of their entire Florida vacation.

Then, in the early 2000s, a dolphin swim program became available at the Miami Seaquarium. That gave Fort Lauderdale visitors a second option and changed our business for many years. Guests could choose between a closer dolphin experience in Miami or travel farther south for a dolphin program in the Florida Keys.

That changed again in 2025 when the Miami Seaquarium closed to the public and its animals were relocated.

So after more than 30 years, Dolphin World Fort Lauderdale has come full circle. We started by helping Fort Lauderdale visitors travel to the Florida Keys for their dolphin experience, and today the Upper Keys are once again the destinations I recommend when someone calls me and asks:

“John, where can we swim with dolphins?”

My answer is simple: Key Largo or Islamorada.

In a way, it feels like coming home.

So if you are staying in Fort Lauderdale and have always dreamed about getting into the water with a dolphin, do not cross it off your vacation list just because there is no longer a dolphin facility in Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

Pick your day. Rent a car or drive your own. Head south. Choose Key Largo or Islamorada. And make the Upper Florida Keys part of your Florida adventure.
