1. While you’re probably most familiar with Flipper dolphins – AKA – bottlenose dolphins, there are actually 40 species that live all over the world.
2. Dolphins, like people, are incredibly social and live in groups that hunt and play together. There are actually large families of dolphins, called pods, that can have 1,000 members or
more. Imagine having to get Christmas presents for all of those family members!
3. Dolphins have incredible eyesight and can hear frequencies 10 times the upper limit of adult humans. They do not have any sense of smell, however.
4. Since dolphins are mammals, they need to come to the surface of the water to breathe. But, unlike land mammals that eat and breathe through their mouths, dolphins have a separate
blowhole to breathe. This prevents dolphins from drowning.
5. Dolphins can send an “auditory image” that’s a bit like a hologram. When one dolphin wants to tell another dolphin way over there in the ocean something important, he or she sends a
sonar image. They are essentially sending noise but it is noise that can be seen by other dolphins. How cool is that?!
